Backup! Backup! Backup!

Here is another usually over looked important piece of your computing master plan… backups!

Does this sound familiar? Someone (usually a friend) tells you that you need to back up your computer to protect your precious pictures that you have been carefully cataloging for years.  So you head off to your local tech store and are convinced in purchasing some sort of backup hardware device thingy you don’t quite understand. You bring it home, connect it to your computer, answering a few questions to the best of your ability and then never give it another thought.  Then everyone once and a while you think to yourself, “I wonder how my backups are doing?” and attempt to go looking only to become confused and close everything down and assume all is well.

This scenario is one that I come across all too often and finds me usually too late to do anything about it.

Backups Are Important!!

Far too many people don’t realize just how important backups are until you need to use one. At that point they are everything to you and your success in getting back to your ‘normal’ computer.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself in making your backup decisions:

What data is important enough to be backed up?  Is is just documents and pictures?  Do you have multiple user accounts when logging in and do they each have their own documents and pictures?

Do you have programs that you no longer have the software or product keys to install?  Are the programs customized for you or your business and would be difficult and or time consuming to setup again?

Do you travel often and or have multiple computers that you work from?

Do you have a backup in place presently and think it is running when it is supposed to but you really aren’t sure?
